What is design thinking?

A prospective architecture student recently shared a portfolio with an art project of decorated boxes made with a template.

The work demonstrated surface design ability, but it wasn't yet communicating the kind of spatial thinking that architecture programs want to see.

During our conversation, we reframed the project toward an investigation of form following function. The project evolved from decorating basic forms to designing and constructing an original series of box structures, each responding to a specific use. (like toolbox, candy box, cookie box, etc.)

The Takeaway: 

Architecture schools are evaluating original spatial design thinking. Students who delve deeper into 3-D ideas, physical making, and material exploration present a more complete view of their abilities.
