Judgement over skill

After years of observing highly selective creative admissions processes, one thing has become increasingly clear to me: Selective art and design schools are often evaluating judgment as much as skill in their applicants.

Technical ability matters, but many applicants to top programs are already highly capable. What begins to differentiate students is selection, restraint, and independent decision-making.

A portfolio can be visually advanced and still fall flat. Another may be less polished, yet reveal a stronger underlying point of view.

Creative institutions are not simply assembling classes of high performers when they admit students, they are trying to identify students capable of developing into thoughtful peers, collaborators, and original thinkers.
